Abstract presented at the EGU General Assembly 2025 in Vienna, describing a spatial modeling study of blue carbon sequestration in Posidonia oceanica under different future scenarios and human pressures.
P. oceanica meadows potentially vulnerable to ecosystem degradation due to the combined effects of reduced ecological condition and elevated anthropogenic pressure. Areas at risk were identified by integrating structural (shoot density), functional (rhizome production), and cumulative pressure proxies, including proximity to ports, river mouths, wastewater discharges, and anchoring pressure. Specifically, meadows characterised by low shoot density, low rhizome production, and high cumulative anthropogenic pressure were classified as areas at risk of degradation. Provided as GeoTiff raster layer (resolution: 1/16 minute. 541 Mb).
Condition of P. oceanica meadows assessed by integrating information on ecosystem structure and functioning to support ecosystem accounting. Structural (shoot density) and functional (rhizome production) indicators were combined into a composite Ecosystem Condition Index normalised on a 0-1 scale, where 0 represents the lowest ecosystem condition and 1 the highest, in accordance with the principles of System of Environmental - Economic Accounting-Ecosystem Accounting (SEEA-EA). Provided as GeoTiff raster layer (resolution: 1/16 minute. 541 Mb).
