Assessing the overall carbon sequestration in the Italian Posidonia oceanica meadows (PRIN 20229SNN47)
This project focuses on the vital role of marine
coastal ecosystems—specifically Posidonia oceanica
meadows—in the context of climate change and
anthropogenic pressure. Coastal zones are under
significant stress due to high human population density
(28% in Italy). Despite this pressure, they are
essential for biodiversity and provide critical
ecosystem services, the most important being carbon
sequestration (Blue Carbon). This project specifically
targets the Italian Posidonia oceanica
meadows, the Mediterranean's most significant coastal
marine ecosystem.
